How Do You Stay Anchored When Life Feels Unsteady?

Lessons from Colossians 2:6-7

A Secure Foundation in Unsteady Times

When was the last time you felt untethered—like life’s shifting sands threatened to knock you off your feet? Perhaps it was an unexpected loss, a career change, or a fractured relationship. The truth is, storms come for us all. But in Colossians 2:6-7, Paul reminds believers that we don’t have to be swayed by life’s turbulence. Instead, we can be deeply rooted in Christ, who is the immovable anchor of our souls.

Rooted in Christ

Paul’s first instruction is to be “rooted” in Christ. Picture a towering tree, its roots spread wide and deep beneath the surface, drinking in nourishment from rich soil. This is how our spiritual lives should look—grounded in Christ’s Word, strengthened by prayer, and enriched by Christian community. Jeremiah 17:7-8 paints a similar picture: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord…They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.” Shallow roots lead to spiritual instability, but deep roots anchored in Christ sustain us through every drought and storm.

Built Up in Faith

Paul doesn’t just tell us to be rooted—he calls us to be “built up” in faith. Think of constructing a building, one brick at a time. Each step of obedience and each act of trust adds to the framework of our faith. Ephesians 2:20-22 echoes this imagery, reminding us that Christ is the cornerstone, and we are being built together as a dwelling for His Spirit. Faith is not static—it grows as we daily choose to trust Jesus, even when we don’t see the whole plan.

Overflowing with Thankfulness

What’s the outcome of being rooted and built up in Christ? A life overflowing with thankfulness. Gratitude isn’t something we force—it’s the natural overflow of a heart aware of God’s presence and provision. Psalm 107:1 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” When we know we are held by the Creator of the universe, even the darkest seasons can’t steal our joy.

A Warning Against Drift

Paul also issues a caution: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy.” (Col. 2:8) It’s easy to get caught up in worldly wisdom, self-help ideologies, or even our own pride. But just as a tree cut off from its roots withers, we weaken when we drift from Christ. Cross-referencing Jesus’ teaching in John 15:4-5, we are reminded that we must abide in Him, for apart from Him, we can do nothing.

Application: How to Stay Anchored in Christ

  1. Nourish Your Roots: Spend intentional time in God’s Word daily. Let scripture soak into your heart like water to a tree’s roots.
  2. Build with Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage you and hold you accountable. A strong faith community strengthens your spiritual foundation.
  3. Practice Gratitude Daily: At the end of each day, reflect on where you saw God’s faithfulness and give thanks. Gratitude keeps your heart aligned with His goodness.
